Abstract

ABSTRACT The aim of our paper is to analyze the determinants of job satisfaction in a cross-national setting, using the 5th wave of the European Social Survey (15 875 individuals from 27 countries). Our results provide evidence that subjective job characteristics are associated stronger with job satisfaction than objective working conditions: work-life balance, variety in work and advancement opportunities are the most important subjective job characteristics influencing job satisfaction. We also show that discrepancy between expected job characteristics and experiences has strong negative effect on satisfaction. The novelty of our paper is that we analyze the effect of subjective job characteristics among different subsamples: Eastern Europe vs. Western Europe, individuals with high education vs. individuals with lower education, individuals living with children vs. individuals living with-out children, individuals above 50 years of age vs. individuals below 50 years of age, and public sector employees vs. private sector employees.
Keywords: job satisfaction; subjective job characteristics; objective working conditions; crossnational comparison; European Social Survey
