Abstract

This paper explores the relationship between disability and social exclusion, through the lens of Zsuzsa Ferge's writings on inequalities in physical and social life chances. We explore potential intersectional effects using administrative data, surveys (n=136), expert interviews (n=36), and field experiences. Our results confirm that disability – difficulties in performing certain daily activities – cannot be attributed to people's health status alone and that there can be significant differences in the opportunities for social participation between two villages with different socio-economic backgrounds.
