Abstract

Abstract Intimate partner violence against women is a major human rights, health and social problem in Hungary. However public policy has never regarded it as an important issue. Comparable national data are lacking as in Hungary very few data collection and research were done in the past 20 years. This paper looks at available researches and presents the main findings of them. Data prove the lack of relevant information and knowledge about intimate partner violence even amongst professionals working at law enforcement agencies. Stereotypical thinking about intimate partner violence is also accepted in a wide circle of professionals and public opinion. Keywords: intimate partner violence against women; public policy; prevalence studies, intimate partner violence in life of inmates, stereotypes
